How to use the verb "to be" in English?

Now that we know what the meanings of the verb to be can be , let's talk about the two most common uses.

Use of the Verb to be

It mainly works to declare actions or states that affect the subject of the sentence, regardless of the time in which it is found.

I am Italian    ------------      Soy Italiano
She was a student --  
Ella era una estudiante


Use of the auxiliary verb to be

When used with other verbs, it expresses states or actions that occur at that moment or over a period of time. This is when –ing is used with the main verb.

She is waiting    -----  Ella esta esperando

Verb to be in Present

Ejemplos del verbo to be en presente:

  • She is sad = Ella está triste
  • It is not your classroom = No es tu salón de clase
  • Are they ready? = ¿Están listos?
